When stress hits, your body produces an array of biochemicals that can throw everything off balance. Your heart rate increases, your breathing becomes shorter or erratic, and your thoughts can start to spiral. The interesting part is that we can create this same stress response just through our thoughts alone. Have you ever caught yourself thinking your way into a downward spiral?
The good news is that just as quickly as we can push the body into stress, we can also guide it back to a more balanced state with a few simple but powerful shifts. Here are some of my favorites for turning things around.
1. Limit Negative Input
Be mindful of how much negative news, shows, or even music you consume. Taking in other people’s stress and suffering can trigger your own nervous system and impact your overall well being more than you might realize.
2. Be Aware of Caffeine Intake
If you notice anxiety creeping in after coffee, try reducing your intake or avoid drinking it on an empty stomach. Small adjustments here can make a noticeable difference in how your body responds.
3. Practice Breathwork
Breath work is incredibly powerful for grounding you in the present moment and shifting your body out of fight or flight mode. Techniques like Ujjayi pranayama or even simple slow breathing can help restore balance. Consistency and patience are key.
4. Prioritize Restful Sleep
Sleep plays a major role in regulating your nervous system. Try putting your phone away before bed and consider calming practices like gentle stretching, yin yoga, or breathing exercises if you have trouble winding down.
5. Protect Your Energy
Pay attention to the people around you. If certain relationships feel draining or one sided, it may be time to create some distance. Your energy is valuable, and who you spend time with can greatly influence your state of mind.
Stress is inevitable, but staying stuck in it is not. With a little awareness and intention, you can help your body return to a place of calm and balance.
